Using conventions from real media texts

In your experience how has your understanding of conventions developed through created your productions?

Explain the tasks you have done across the years of the course

Start with writing about the concept of genre.  What is it?  Why is it important?

-       Made a small independent film opening

Talk about the importance of genres for both audiences (easily recognised and understood) and institutions (as a mode of production – to target widest possible and specific audiences).

Conforming and subverted

Did you fit the conventions that you wanted – for film opening – we tried to make it serious but it came up more awkward.

Goodwin – performance/ narrative/ concept.

Which websites and digipaks inspired you.

What have you learnt about using conventions from real media texts?

At AS we created a film opening called 'Untamed' the genre it fit was teen drama.  Prior to filming we researched other teen dramas. At A2 we filmed a music video with the song 'Nostalgia' by NAO this fits the R&B/pop genre so we researched real music videos with the same genre.

At AS we researched real media texts such as Juno, Perks Of Being A Wallflower and Blue Is The Warmest Colour as they all are teen dramas.  We did not only research the film opening for each but also  the ancillary texts for example film posters and websites.  In many teen dramas including ours there is usually the concepts of teenage rebellion, family and life, also in each of these the films the protagonist of the film has a dramatic event happen to them which influenced us to include in our film opening.  Researching into other teen dramas was particularly useful as we looked at was similar in most but also what they did not include, this influenced us to use a gay main character to stand out amongst other teen dramas.  In addition, our own production company we created was called 'Night Time Productions' we made this studying small independent film institutions such as IFC productions.

In year 13 we created a music video, the song we chose (Nostalgia by NAO) was both genres of R&B and pop.  The main pop artists that we researched was Katy Perry and Dua Lipa, we studied both the music videos and their ancillary text such as digipak's and websites.  Not only did these artists have the same music genre as also the majority of their fans was our target audience, which is why we thought it was essencial to research not only their music videos but also thier overall brand image and marketing.

We looked at popular female R&B singers like Rihanna and SZA their music video included concepts such as being narrative based and including a main protagonist.  For our website our main influences were FKA Twigs and Paramore.  Paramore's home page heavily influenced ours, an example would be having the newest music video playing in the background and FKA Twigs website influence our shopping page.

Some concepts which we challenged in our music video was that many of the Pop and R&B music we researched included were narrative, we subverted away from these in our music video as we ours was performance based.  We did not just do this to stand out amongst these other artists but because we thought a narrative would not fit Nova personality better than a performance.

In conclusion, using real media texts and immensly improved our overall products both in year 12 and 13, this because it allowed our music video look much more professional if we compared it to already existing ones.

  1. Your introduction is much better here.
    - you show what you found by researching films, but you need to then explain how you used this - you need detailed examples from your film.
    - again, you really need to focus on your progress over the two years - this is so crucial.
