Media Language is the way in which codes and conventions are portrayed into a video to the audience. For my coursework at A2, we had to create a music video also other ancillary texts such as a website, digipak and interviews. We used a variety of different codes and conventions to create meaning within our video. The reason we chose the song 'Nostalgia' is because we thought it would really appeal to our target audience because the song sounds young and the music genre is popular with teenagers.
Mise en scene was an important aspect of our music video as it made the audience more engaged with the main performer, Nova. An element of mise en scene was her makeup and clothes, we decided to dress Nova in clothes in the current trend, also have bright makeup which stood out, this was to create an image and a brand for Nova. Another aspect was to the lighting and colour, in most shots we included a pinky/purple colour correction, one of the reasons for this is to show Nova to be more feminine and young also many of the shots are colourful.
The use of sound was the whole music video, the song was Nostalgia by NAO, which fits the music genre pop/R&B. Nostalgia is sang by an indepedant female women which I think makes Nova stand out more as if its only her voice it empowers her and makes her more empowered.
We really wanted to present Nova as being a strong female character and we had the chance to do this through the use of shots and camera work. Nova was presented to the audience as being both confiendent and empowered, we were able to present her like this through low shots and even worms eye view, Nova is seen to be much larger to viewer therefore more bold which is we wanted to express the audience using media language. Another example of when Nova is the main focus to the viewer is when we have 360 degree pan shot wher she was the focal point, this is another instance where Nova appears really cool and confident.
When editing the music video we continued the notion of Nova filling each shot, we accomplished this by zooming in on either Nova's face or body in shots. In addition almost every shot we included had the main performer, Nova, in this it forces the audience to recognise her and how empowered she is.

In conclusion, sound affected our music video. This is because we conformed to Andrew Goodwin's theory of 'thought beats' which basically means that the music is in time with what happens on screen, for example, the shots change with the beat of the music. We knew this was important to include in the music video as it allows the song to fit with what Nova was doing on screen.
Some good use of examples from your work, and you structure it well.
ReplyDelete- I think you still need more, especially with theory. Vernallis, etc.
- what about synergy with your ancillary texts?
